WKU Society of African American Alumni

logoMany of us defined our identity during our years on the Hill while we received the tools necessary for the success of our future. The Society of African American Alumni was formed with an interest in solidifying African Americans who attended WKU around the greatness of their experience at WKU.  Over the years, it has become a great venue for alumni to reconnect with that college experience and with the people with whom they shared the experience.

The Society has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception.  A great benefit of this growth is a more engaged African American Alumni base with the entire WKU community.  However, there is still work to be done.  We are continuously fundraising for the Society scholarship fund to benefit current WKU African American students.  We also seek to build mentoring programs to encourage and assist current students to complete the path to graduation and become a member of the alumni family.  We host and participate in several events that are designed to mentor and encourage current and future students.  The attendance at Homecoming has grown each year, and this year’s events promise to be even better than ever.  These things are possible because of the growing number of contributing members of the Society of African American Alumni.

Join the WKU Society of African American Alumni family, and participate in any way you can.  The generosity of your membership will be used in the most positive way, and the value of your participation is immeasurable.  Click HERE to become a member of The Society of African American Alumni.  For more information, contact SAAA President Marshall Gray at marshall.gray@wku.edu or visit our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/WKUSAAA/join button

Intercultural Student Engagement Center (ISEC) Academy is a Western Kentucky University initiative/program to assist first-year students that identify as students of color (Black, Hispanic/Latin, Asian, Native American, Multiracial) and/or who are first generation, Pell eligible, and have some academic need with their transition, persistence, and graduation from Western Kentucky University.  This program is coordinated by the Intercultural Student Engagement Center.  We believe that students of color at Western Kentucky University are scholars who will achieve positive change in themselves, the WKU Community, and the world!

The primary components of the ISEC-Academy include peer mentoring and a living learning community for the incoming first-year students. Through the ISEC Academy program, students will have the opportunities for transformation related to personal development, academic engagement, and a culturally diverse support network.

The Society of African American Alumni is asking alumni to join us in supporting this program by making a $100 commitment to sponsor a student in the ISEC Academy.

HOWARD & KAYLA BAILEY LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Society of African American Alumni provides four recurring scholarships valued at $1,000 each for African American students who have proven to be leaders among their peers. As the cost of college steadily rises, the Society wants to be prepared to offer these students more financial help. In October 2008, Society kicked off our $100,000 “Be the Dream” campaign in hopes of bringing the scholarship endowment fund up to $180,000, which would double the amount of scholarship money given to these students.

Put simply, every gift matters. Your role is to participate, no matter how big or small the amount you feel compelled to give turns out to be. Did you know you can have an automatic deduction from your account set up? Imagine what the power of all of us giving $5, $10, $20 each month could add up to be! Our immediate goal this year is to raise $40,000 before June 30. Won’t you help?
