Health is the foundation of learning. Positive educational outcomes for children occur best in a climate of family wellness. Many programs do not have the health staff to successfully manage and carryout the health, mental health, oral health, and nutrition requirements mandated by the Head Start and Early Head Start programs. Therefore, they rely heavily on a collaborative effort to meet the health needs of children and families. Education and Family Services staff are in a unique position to build relationships with families and promote child and family wellness. However, many times they are provided with little or no health training.
Partners in Practice: Health & Nutrition for Family Services Staff is an intensive, two-day, training institute for education and family services staff. The institute will provide participants with the basic knowledge of medical, mental, oral health, and nutrition services mandated for Head Start and Early Head Start children. Participants will better understand their role in promoting family wellness and partnering with families to advocate for children’s health needs. The Partners in Practice institute will also address the current health care system, documentation and record keeping, health resources, and communication techniques for working with families.
- Participants will understand the impact of health on school readiness and future well-being;
- Participants will review Head Start comprehensive health mandates;
- Participants will learn to identify and recognize health concerns requiring intervention;
- Participants will explore strategies to engage families as advocates for their children’s health; and
- Participants will develop strategies for identifying appropriate community health partners and taking the next steps in interventions.
