UofL Rapid Prototyping Center: Multi-Scale Manufacturing
Kentucky companies have ready access to manufacturing research capabilities that range in scale from macro to nano. The UofL Rapid Prototyping Center (RPC) is one part of the Kentucky Multi-Scale Manufacturing and Nano-Integration Node (http://www.kymultiscale.net/). This NSF funded resource combines the macro-scale additive manufacturing of the RPC with UofL’s microfabrication cleanroom and new nano-scale 3D printing capabilities at UK.
Macro-scale additive manufacturing
The RPC offers the full range of 3D printing and additive manufacturing methods currently available for polymers and metals. For polymers part size can be as large as a one meter cube or smaller with features on the order of 100 micron. Metal fabrication is more limited in maximum size and minimum feature resolution but offers a wide range of alloys.
UofL’s Micro/Nano Technology Center (MNTC) is a class 100/1000 cleanroom with packaging, SEM imaging & characterization capabilities. Devices include microelectronic sensors, actuators and lab-on-a-chip reactors. The center offers a large array of capabilities, an experienced engineering team, protection of intellectual property and a business mindset. Prototypes can include integration of micro-scale devices with RPC-fabricated packages and structures.
Nano-scale 3D printing
The newest capability is housed in UK’s Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering. Their Nanoscribe system provides 3D printing with resolution of nanometers. Devices and structures at this scale have unique mechanical and physical behavior. Integration and interface with the human-scale world is a challenge.
