Health Literacy and Family Services goes beyond the Head Start Program Performance Standard 45-day requirements and health records to explore the role family services plays in supporting health outcomes in your HS/EHS program. This training will examine the broader role of advocacy in supporting family health awareness and growth in furtherance of school readiness goals. Advocacy is in creating healthful environments; ensuring access to care; and campaigning to eliminate all health, social, and economic inequalities. Family service staff play a vital role in supporting program health services, which may look different depending on your program design and family service job description. Whatever your process, Health Literacy and Family Services is a close examination of family engagement processes supporting positive health outcomes, achievement of school readiness goals, and providing life-long learning opportunities.

This training focuses on how family service staff can best support program and family goals in achieving positive health outcomes through health literacy principles. The topic and materials are for non-health professionals in your HS/EHS program who support effective engagement with families. Health literacy occurs when health information and services created for the public match with people's capacity to find, understand, and use them. Non-health professionals and life experiences often shape that understanding. This session considers a more integrated approach to health conversations and activities with families, which expands their capacity for health literacy and thereby increases their ability to be effective advocates.

Health Literacy and Family Services event participants will better understand how to support healthy, safe, and economically stable family outcomes. Discussions and activities will center around the family service area. Health care professionals are encouraged to participate to support development and implementation of program improvement activities and integration of services. Sessions will combine discussion of relevant regulations and resources with small and large group activities.

If program staff want parents to effectively engage with their HS/EHS program, then programs must better engage parents. Don’t miss this opportunity to be among the first in the country to participate in the T/TAS Health Literacy and Family Services training – reserve your spot today!
