Fatherhood initiatives, fatherhood programs, and male involvement are ways we often describe the work we do in the fatherhood area. The Responsible Fatherhood Engagement Institute: A Systematic Approach is designed to explore and examine where you are on the fatherhood continuum and help you integrate it fully in your Head Start/Early Head Start program. This Institute goes beyond fatherhood activities; we will explore systematic practices so that fathers are equally engaged in the program.

 “Father absence… is an American problem that crosses racial, ethnic, and class lines. All across the United States, fathers are quietly disappearing from the lives of their children,” (A Statement from the Morehouse Conference on African American Fathers. 1999. Morehouse Research Institute and the Institute for American Values). Engaging fathers in Head Start and Early Head Start is critical to school readiness and our society. The Responsible Fatherhood Engagement Institute: A Systematic Approach will explore engaging fathers in management systems and all Head Start service areas. We will examine approaches and strategies to engage incarcerated fathers and non-custodial fathers, as well as the woman’s role in engaging fathers. Participants will be engaged in a variety of training approaches designed to address all learning styles, such as small and large group work, case study examinations, and more. This will be a fun-filled, thought-provoking institute delivered by trainers who have real-world experience in navigating fatherhood challenges.

 Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will understand the connection to father engagement; school readiness; and the Parent, Family, Community Engagement (PFCE) framework;
  • Participants will examine strategies to engage fathers throughout the program using a systematic approach;
  • Participants will compare and contrast “Fatherhood” and “Male Involvement” and the need for both;
  • Participants will explore research and data about the importance of fathers in the lives of children; and
  • Participants will develop a plan for assessing, engaging, and evaluating a “Fatherhood Program”.
